Streaming entertainment is bigger than ever, and with so many streaming services adding new shows and movies every week, it can be nearly impossible to sort the good from the bad. If you need something to watch and don’t want to wade through the digital muck that washes up on the internet’s shores, follow our picks below for the best new shows and movies to stream on Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Amazon, and other services.
On the list this week: A frightening French series, an underrated Western, and more.
Marianne season 1
Netflix has become one of the best places to find great horror online, and one of the latest additions to the service’s cauldron of chills is Marianne, a French series spooky enough that you won’t mind looking down to focus on the subtitles. The show follows Emma (Victoire Du Bois), a horror novelist ready to close the book on her long-running series. When a woman from her hometown delivers a gruesome message at a book signing, Emma returns to the eerie coastal town of Elden, where she must confront her past, and the fact that the villainous witch from her novels may not be a product of her imagination. Marianne is a creepy, well-paced horror series that builds plenty of tension before it busts out the scares.

Explained season 2 premiere
Vox’s documentary series Explained is starting its second season. The series offers deep dives into compelling subjects like the stock market, K-pop, cults, even the history of the exclamation point. The show uses interviews with experts, archival footage, and clear infographics to convey information. Whether you want to better understand the global water crisis or the byzantine rules of cricket, Explained is a treasure trove of knowledge.

Wu-Tang: An American Saga
There have been plenty of important groups in the history of rap, but none have the mystique, talent, and sheer audacity of the Wu-Tang Clan, whose ominous beats, skillful verses, and kung-fu film aesthetic made them instant legends in the early ‘90s. Wu-Tang: An American Saga offers a dramatic telling of the group’s founding, as producer Bobby Diggs (Ashton Sanders), aka The RZA, tries to build a music career amid the poverty and crime of New York City, assembling like-minded talents to form hip-hop’s ultimate supergroup.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
Who would have expected, a decade ago, that Lego would have its own cinematic universe? The success of The Lego Movie prompted a couple spinoffs — The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie — and now a direct sequel, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (bless their quirky naming conventions). The film begins with the city of Bricksburg being visited by Duplo aliens. Although lovable everyman Emmet Brickowski (Chris Pratt) tries to make peace with the visitors, conflict ensues, the city is destroyed, and a number of major characters end up kidnapped by the aliens. As with the first film, The Lego Movie 2 features great voice acting and a cavalcade of gags, making for a fun, family-friendly adventure.

Rango
An underappreciated gem from 2011, Rango follows a chameleon (Johnny Depp), who ends up lost in the Mojave Desert, eventually ending up in a town called Dirt. Adopting the name Rango as part of a tough-guy persona, he accidentally kills the local apex predator, a red-tailed hawk; the townsfolk assume Rango must be a certified badass and appoint him Sheriff, a job for which he might not be entirely suited. Rango is a great homage to classic Westerns, with some distinctly detailed character designs that set it apart from most animated movies of the decade.
